As we move towards the end of summer tennis, time for the next update....
Club Tournament
Those taking part should already have found details of their matches the first weekend by following the link on the club website. Please check closely as you may have two matches either day.
Tournament fees are payable to Anthony Pollard, please, asap during the tournament. He will also be taking numbers for the BBQ on the final Saturday (£6 adults, juniors £3) We will collect payment for this later in the week. Our Chairman has secured musical entertainment for the evening from Steve Ireland and the Mr VDBs - junior and senior - I'm told. The BBQ is open to all club members, family and friends.
Please make sure you have a can of decent tennis balls for each of your matches. Cans are on sale at the club for £4.
A full catering service will be available throughout. (Winners usually offer to buy their opponents a drink !!) Hot meals each evening - menu to be confirmed on tournament website. Please bear in mind that although we will do about 15 servings of each evening meal, we can't take orders earlier in the day (please don't text us !!) and will be on a first come, first served basis. Also, as most matches are starting at 12 noon on the opening weekend we will be serving bacon or sausage baps rather than the Big Breafast.
Important - Courts/tennis during the tournament
Saturday coaching - 9am and 10 am sessions as usual. No 11am session. All courts then in use.
Sunday mix in Sunday 1st September - will run as usual as matches don't start until 12 noon. All courts then in use.
Monday/Wednesday evening mix ins - will not take place during the 2 week tournament. All courts likely to be in use.
Tuesday/Thursday evenings - all courts set aside for matches
Saturday/Sunday - courts will be free from approx 4.30pm for Parent Players/juniors/seniors social play.
Weekday play until 6pm not affected.
Floodlights
Due to some problems with over riding the floodlights on Courts 1-3 Hans has kindly fixed new locks to the boxes inside the clubhouse.- operated by a key which is on the white plastic fob.
A reminder that during the tournament we still only have floodlight permission until 9.30pm. If your match is likely to run much beyond that time, we may have to ask you to move to courts 5/6 which are away from houses.
100 Club
Just a little word from from me regarding our "100" Club ... would just like to thank everyone who got on board when sorting their membership out ... BUT for those of you who prefer to be chased in the Clubhouse, trapped on the tennis court or caught in the kitchen, I shall be available during our September tourney to give to you a lucky number for the small cost of £10, with 50% immediately going towards Club funds ........... the rest in prize money............very worthwhile cause !!
Please look out for me, we've nearly reached our target of 100 members !!!
Look forward to pestering, I mean seeing you all soon !!
Julie Houli .. (Good luck and remember got to be in it to win it !!!!! )
Winter League Vets Ladies
Interested in playing in the Leicestershire Vets Ladies Leagues ? You (and a partner) need to be 40 and happy to arrange approx 7 matches against opponents from other clubs bewteen October 2013 and March 2014. Please ask if more details/entry form needed. £!0 per person.
Lost Property
Recently two items have been lost at the club - a Head black/white racquet and a pair of white rimmed sunglasses. Seen them ?
If so, please get in touch.
Health and Safety
Some of you may have noticed (via a sticker on kitchen window) that the club's grading has gone from Very Good to Good. This is not as a result of any aspect of cleanliness (!!) but simply because we do not (currently) have a pest control book (no pests, however !!) and although we have several members with H/S training, they are not permanently in the kitchen !! We are looking into both matters but please rest assured Health and Safety are not affected.
Tournament Successes
In recent weeks we pleased to report that Ben Minski has won the Carisbrooke Ratings Tournament and Eddy Smart/partner have won the 16 and Under doubles in a tournament at Hunstanton.
Matthew Howse and partner have this week reached the final of the Boys 12 and Under doubles at the Leics. Junior County Closed - final yet to be played, so we wish him well.
Best wishes,
Sue
Newsletter Update 20 July 2013
Dear all,
First of all, a welcome to the 35 new members who have joined over the last fortnight. The sunny weather and Wimbledon have certainly increased tennis interest !
Just a reminder that we have our Summer Ratings event for 90+ juniors next week Monday - Friday from 10am until 6pm (12 noon Tuesdays/Thursdays). All 6 courts will probably be in use throughout this time. As in past years, we have organised courts at Carisbrooke for members during this time - thanks to Pete Blackwell for agreeing to this. On Friday evening all 6 courts will be available at Oadby from 6.30pm approx as there is no junior coaching.
If you want to take advantage of the Carisbrooke option, please would one of your pair/four just e-mail sleste1@yahoo.co.uk with details of day/time. You don't need to collect a card this time, but we do need to monitor demand. This Carisbrooke option is for seniors and Invited Juniors only.
As before, we are offering a catering service throughout the week. If you have any free time on Thursday afternoon or Friday, please get in touch. It will probably just be a matter of selling ice cream and cold drinks !
Please continue to check Courts in Use on the club website as there are a number of mixed/vets matches to be fitted in over July/August. From Saturday 27th July - Thursday 1st August 3 courts have been set aside for matches in the Closed County Championships. We have 32 club members playing in this, so demand for fixed fours/social mix in sessions will be reduced anyway. It does mean, however, that you may see some non club members at the club. In the evenings, if floodlights are needed, court 1-3 will be used to avoid visitors having to unlock floodlight boxes etc.
Our defibrillator is now mounted in a box inside the clubhouse (leaving it outside is a problem during cold weather). 35 people attended the training but advice on using it is spoken to you anyway upon activation. Thank you to all those who donated money towards the purchase of this - over £300 in total was given.
Use of the kitchen - we have had a problem with the fan oven this week, but hopefully it has now been sorted. If you do use it/hear a strange noise from the fan, please let us know asap. A polite reminder - please wash/dry and put away all mugs, glasses etc used - please don't leave it for others to do !
Finally, please sign up for our two tennis events in August - a USA Tournament on Wednesday 7th (6.45pm start) and Ladies' Night on 8th (6pm start). All seniors and Invited Juniors welcome.
Best wishes
