Seniors Lawn Tennis Club of Great Britain v Lords and Commons Lawn Tennis Club Played at The All England Lawn Tennis Club

THE SENIORS’ LAWN TENNIS CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN MATCH REPORT

David Straker Reports:

This year our two pair match was kindly hosted at The AELTC by two of our opponents, Lord David Willoughby de Broke
and Field Marshall Lord Charles Guthrie. Their other pair was Lord Anthony St John and Lord Greville Howard who captains The Lords and Commons team and organised the match for us.

We were under cover on carpet courts and the match comprised each pair playing a set and a championship tie-break against both the other pairs. This fitted pretty well into our court time slot, though one of the first round matches had to be curtailed as one of our pairs arrived late due to extreme traffic delays.

Whilst we fielded slightly the older team and our opponents were all clearly good quality tennis players, we managed a comfortable win by four rubbers to nil without the loss of a set. Even though the scores looked comfortable we certainly knew we had been in a match.

David Straker / Robin Smith v David Willoughby de Broke / Charles Guthrie won 6-1, 11-9 David Straker / Robin Smith v Greville Howard / Anthony St John Won 6-1, 10-6
John Barnett / Alan Roberts v Greville Howard / Anthony St John Won 6-2
John Barnett / Alan Roberts v David Willoughby de Broke / Charles Guthrie Won 6-4, 10-3

Following the match our hosts kindly entertained us to a delightful lunch in the relaxed setting of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
